Types and models of stairs

Designing a stair involves taking into account many parameters, starting with structural resistance and ending with the aesthetics. The final measurements of the walls, the thickness of the floor, the gap left around the stairs, all play an important role in the final product.

All these aspects will be taken into account by our designers as a result of the measurements made by us on site, before executing the design of your staircase.

 Depending on the shape, the space needed, the stairs are classified into:

  • staircases with one or more straight, continuous or square platforms; the treads of these stairs are rectangular;
  • curved or spiral stair rails, continuous or with landing; the treads of these stairs have a trapezoidal shape;

The simplest staircase is the straight one, which does not have deformed treads and the width is kept constant. However the treads may be steeper depending on the available space.

Most modern staircases are single stringers and have at least one landing, a horizontal area of the stair, which gives them a smoother slope and makes walking up easy.

The L-shape stairs have one landing with a 90 degree turn.

U-shape stairs will have a single large landing, usually rectangular form, which changes the direction to 180 degrees or 2 landings, each with an angle of 90 degrees.
The use of landings or fan shaped treads in stairs construction to turn direction has some advantages: the top of the stairs is not directly visible from the bottom, so the upper floor area will benefit from more privacy.

Spiral stairs are built around a center column (tube) that rests on a single point at its base.
These type of stairs have only one handrail on the outer side of the treads. The steps and the handrail are placed at equal distances from the center tube. Such a tight spiral staircase is very efficient in terms of space saving, but those who use it have to be very careful, especially when walking down, because the stairs are very narrow to the center.

A curved staircase, known also as helical staircase doesn’t require a fixed central column as usually feature handrails on both sides. These type of stairs have the advantage of a more evenly arranged treads (steps) than in the case of spiral stairs.
Due to the flexibility associated with curved stair design, this option is found in a variety of settings for both commercial and residential. Helical stairs can have oval or elliptic shape.
The wood is, by its nature, a warm, vivid, soothing, welcoming and comfortable material to work with. It is easy to process it in order to obtain the desired shape and size.
The natural color of wood, in its various nuances, offers great freedom when associate with other materials and colors to achieve the best possible interior design.


Details on stair elements:

  • Step height should preferably be between 16.6 - 18 cm to make it as comfortable as possible to going up, but those with a height of between 18 and 20 cm are acceptable if the space does not allow otherwis;
  • To make going up as comfortably as possible, step height should preferably be between 16.6 - 18 cm. There are situations when the space doesn’t allow it so a step height between 18 and 20 cm is acceptable.
  • In terms of width steps, it is recommended to be at least 80-100 cm to allow easy access for going up and down.
  • The ramp represents an uninterrupted sequence of at least 3 treads (steps) and a maximum of 16 steps. Ramps with more than 16 steps must be interrupted by horizontal decks called landings.
  • The balustrade is the vertical protection element placed on the open side of the ramp or landing, in order to ensure safety traffic. The safety open height must be 0,80 m.
